While we are growing up, most of us tend to forget that our parents, uncles and aunts are growing old as well. The younger generation is all swamped with making the most of their youth and exploring new adventures, that’s when time slowly creeps in and takes its toll on the bodies of our beloved elders. Since their loved possessions are all grown up and busy now, idle mind starts wandering to places it shouldn’t. Fear of loneliness seeps in and monotony controls the day. That’s when they need their kids by their side the most, small tokens of appreciation and little gestures to make them feel wanted and keep them going. Special and heartwarming moments like witnessing your child walking down the aisle with the love of their life , or watching them have their first child are some of the things our nurturers live for and the story of Alison Ferrel was no different.
Alison, a new-bride, decided to celebrate her wedding in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, on May 13, in the company of everyone she adored.
She made sure that on her very special day, all her loved ones and friends were there to witness this crucial step in her life. Like any other bride, she needed a token that represented something old, borrowed, new, and something blue on her way to the altar. And she chose to go with a rather unusual choice for that.
She wanted her adorable 92-year-old uncle, Bill Lee Eblen to serve as her “something blue”, wearing his immaculate Marine dress rather than an old piece of jewelry, blue eyeshadow, or a blue bouquet of flowers.
So, she went to pay him a visit and formally asked him if he would do the honor. Bill was then, propped up in his hospital bed recovering from a recent bout with pneumonia. An emotional Eblen cleared his throat to ask a nurse if he’d be healthy enough to meet his goal. “What’s your goal?” the nurse asked to which Bill replied “To be her ‘something blue’ on her wedding day,” the 92-year-old replied, pointing to his 30-year-old niece, Alison Ferrell, who was standing in the corner.
