“In the last year, our PALS program has gone to several area retirement communities with our cats,” a shelter volunteer, Jordan Umerley, said.
Further explaining the details of the initiative she said, “We take older cats (7 years+). Many residents cannot have pets now, so the chance to cuddle a chilled out kitty is great for them. We also invite the residents to come and visit our shelter. It really is fun and a good chance to get the cats socialized.”
The senior citizens have the option of adopting the cats at lower rates.
Most of the communities allow for the people to keep pets and thus, they do have the options of adopting these cats. But the program even has helped raise awareness of the value of senior pets. Through their sheer efforts, 16 have been adopted in the past year alone.
